I recently wrote a post about cross training through running for my Longs Peak trip. I had stated that I never fancied myself as a runner, but that is quickly changing. As I ran more to train for Longs Peak I eventually found myself running close to four miles – enjoying it as well. I have never enjoyed running before, it was always a chore. But sense my big switch to a vegetarian diet high in raw foods I noticed a huge improvement in my overall health.
I remember my first time running when I began to train; I only ran two miles, but completed the run in just under 20 minutes. It wasn’t before too long that a 20 minute run just wasn’t enough. Three mile runs in under 30 minutes became the norm. Now I am pushing close to four miles as a typical run. It’s sort of crazy… I find myself only planning on running three miles, but once I hit three I just keep going.
As of yesterday I decided to enter a couple of runs. My main goal being the Dallas White Rock Marathon (only running the half though). I also plan on running the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot as well. The eight mile race should be a good prep for the twelve mile run in December. Plus it will give me a good feel of how things will be on race day for the half marathon. I never in my life thought I would be running a half marathon. I am truly amazed at how something simple as changing my diet can affect my entire lifestyle.
My main love will always be climbing though. Running will definitely help my climbing though by improving leg and core strength and improving my cardiovascular system for better performance on long hard climbs. Plus, I will be improving my overall health in the process. Already loving this new hobby. Looking forward to seeing where it takes me.
Also, I have decided to start a weekly segment on the blog called Smoothie Tuesday. Every Tuesday I will post a smoothie recipe for you. All of them will be completely RAW (not always Vegan though) and will be something anybody with a high speed blender can make.
